Randalín is a lovely striped shawl with a rose trellis pattern on a garter stitch background. It’s knitted from the bottom up and with only a 2 row repeat to follow, it’s both quick and easy. It is part of the book Þríhyrnur og langsjöl (Three Cornered and Long Shawls), a reference for traditional Icelandic lace shawls. Hélène revised the pattern with a new chart and written instructions. Cozy when knit with Love Story in Natural Brown and Hot Spring Blue, or make a fashion statement in Thyme Purple and Salmon Orange.

Randalín is based on a shawl knitted by Sigurbjörg Þorláksdóttir from Reykjavík in 1982. The colors are arranged like hers but decreases are evenly distributed and the neckline added. In the past, various knitting designs similar to this shawl were quite common on all kinds of clothing. Sometimes this knit trellis pattern was used instead of ribbing on mittens but most often it was used on the so called “sheaths” or sleeves that were knitted cylinders used to shield the wrists and forearms.
Love Story is an exceptional lace yarn created by Hélène Magnússon. It is a very fine 1 ply lace weight yarn made of soft Icelandic lambswool carefully selected by Hélène from Icelandic sheep farmers. Love Story knits beautifully into very delicate and ethereal lace shawls and is reminiscent of the Old handspun yarns that Icelandic lace is known for.
Hélène Magnússon is a Icelandic knit designer, the author of many books about traditional Icelandic knitting and the editor of The Icelandic Knitter. She likes to put a new spin on Icelandic traditions. She began her professional life as a lawyer in Paris before she made a complete life change and moved to Iceland, where she studied textile and fashion at Iceland Academy of the Arts and worked as a hired girl in a sheep farm and a mountain guide. The varied skills she learned in those early years richly inform the amazing hiking and knitting tours she passionately guides in collaboration with tour operator Icelandic Mountain Guides / Iceland Rovers.
Gauge: 10 cm / 4” = 17 sts in garter st with Love Story on needle 4.0 mm/US 6 after blocking. Gauge not essential.
