Inspired by the Mosi Mittens of the Grýla Collection, I made a very soft matching hat, using Gilitrutt Tvíband, my Icelandic lambswool yarn. The little motifs on a green background ensure that the fabric is warm and remind of the thick and spongy moss (mosi in Icelandic) that covers Old Icelandic lava fields. As we enter summer, wild flowers and lichens ad vivid touch of colors that inspired me more color combinations. The hat is knitted in the round from the bottom up and the crown is shaped with decreases.
Gilitrutt Tvíband is a unique plied lace yarn created by Hélène Magnússon. Just like the very fine Love Story, Gilitrutt is made of soft Icelandic lambswool carefully selected by Hélène from Icelandic sheep farmers. Gilitrutt is plied making it just as strong as it is soft. It is a similar weight than Grýla Tviband and can be used instead of it to knit strong but extrasoft mittens and shawls. Versatile, it can be knitted on a variety of needle sizes and will make deliciously light sweaters and soft baby garments.
Hélène Magnússon is a Icelandic knit designer, the author of many books about traditional Icelandic knitting and the editor of The Icelandic Knitter. She likes to put a new spin on Icelandic traditions. She began her professional life as a lawyer in Paris before she made a complete life change and moved to Iceland, where she studied textile and fashion at Iceland Academy of the Arts and worked as a hired girl in a sheep farm and a mountain guide. The varied skills she learned in those early years richly inform the amazing hiking and knitting tours she passionately guides in collaboration with tour operator Icelandic Mountain Guides / Iceland Rovers.
