Fortunately, you shouldn’t get into any sort of trouble knitting the British flag (body) and two French flags (arms) with Icelandic intarsia. Icelandic intarsia is the technique that was used to knit garter stitch inserts in Iceland.
Worn with soft skin shoes, the inserts were decorated with geometric floral patterns. Interpreted in small squares and the natural colours of the sheep, the Flag cardi takes on a very modern look. With no seaming at all, it is very versatile: you can wear it mid-long or, upside down, short, opened or closed with a clever set of buttons. It looks just as good as a wrap or even a scarf!

The Flag jacket pays tribute to artist Birgir Andrésson and one of his works called “United we stand”. It is also a wink at the recent Icesave dispute.

Sizes: XS(S,M,L,XL,XXL) to fit bust 32(86/92, 96/102,106/112, 122/126, 127/132) cm.

Yarn: Jamieson and Smith 2 Ply Lace, Pure Shetland Wool with a touch of Lamswool, 185 yds/169m per 25gm skein;
4(4,5,5,5,5) x 25gm skein – shade 202 (alias RED);
4(4,5,5,6,6) x 25mg skein – shade 3 (alias WHITE);
3(3,4,4,4,5) x 25mg skein – shade 27 (alias BLUE)

Needles and notions: 5mm and 5mm DPN’,; 4 mm crochet hook; 8 little buttons, 1cm (0.4 inches) diameter.

Gauge: 10 x 10 cm / 4×4 inches = 19 sts x 18 garters (36 rows) using 5mm (US #8) needles over garter stitch.

Techniques: Icelandic intarsia.
