Ingibjörg Ólafsdóttir says:
“These embroidered mittens are inspired by a tradition that can be traced back to 19th-century Skagafjörður. I had a lot of fun knitting them, not least because they are a quick knit. When I was unemployed for a few months, I spent some time experimenting with knitting and Icelandic wool.
I visited the the National Museum of Iceland a number of times
I’m very interested in Old Icelandic culture and old craft patterns in particular. I based the embroidery on the back of these mittens on some old embroidery motifs I found at the National Museum; I visited the museum a number of times and each time I would adjust my own design a bit. I’ve always enjoyed knitting with lace weight or other fine yarn, for example Einband-Loðband, a lace weight yarn that comes in an amazing variety of colors. These mittens give me an opportunity to play around with different color combinations so the creative possibilities are almost endless. They are not only fun to knit but also make great presents.”
Ingibjörg’s mittens are for sale in a few chosen stores in Iceland, for example at the National Museum of Iceland. When she’s not knitting mittens, Ingibjörg works for a hotel company in London city.
