This long shawl is inspired by a piece in the Textile Museum of Blönduós that belonged to Halldóra Bjarnadóttir (1873-1981). She was an energetic and remarkable woman, best known for a pioneering work in the education and culture of women and the promotion of the textile industry in the last century. The lace is knitted on every row and demands concentration.
The shawl is a design from my book “Icelandic handknits: 25 heirloom techniques and projects” (Voyageur Press). More than just a book of knitting, it is infused with bits of Icelandic folklore and culture, vintage photographs, and classic Icelandic recipes.
The pattern is available only as a kit or in the book.
Hélène Magnússon is a Icelandic knit designer, the author of many books about traditional Icelandic knitting and the editor of The Icelandic Knitter. She likes to put a new spin on Icelandic traditions. She began her professional life as a lawyer in Paris before she made a complete life change and moved to Iceland, where she studied textile and fashion at Iceland Academy of the Arts and worked as a hired girl in a sheep farm and a mountain guide. The varied skills she learned in those early years richly inform the amazing hiking and knitting tours she passionately guides in collaboration with tour operator Icelandic Mountain Guides / Iceland Rovers.
