Please use the correct electric appliance for your country (you can buy some here in Europe). The electric appliance will not last for ever but you can extend its life by immediately replacing any burnt out light.
Note that the colors may fade in a direct sunlight.
The Elves’ Lights are a knitted version of my felted tulips lights with Icelandic wool. Designed in 2005, they became right away very popular especially in Iceland, so popular indeed that for the past years many copies appeared in the shops and workshops on how to make them were held here and there.
Today, I propose a DIY knitted version but thanks to respect the copyright and not use the pattern for any commercial purpose!
The designer
Hélène Magnússon is a leading knit designer in Iceland, the author of many books about traditional Icelandic knitting and the editor of The Icelandic Knitter. She likes to put a new spin on Icelandic traditions. She began her professional life as a lawyer in Paris before she made a complete life change and moved to Iceland, where she studied textile and fashion at Iceland Academy of the Arts and worked as a hired girl in a sheep farm and a mountain guide. The varied skills she learned in those early years richly inform the hiking and knitting tours she passionately guides in collaboration with tour operator Icelandic Mountain Guides.
Size: after felting, flower is about 8 cm/3” diameter and leave 14 cm/5,5” across.
Wool: for the flowers Plötulopi by ístex, 100% new wool, about 110g/plate, 100g = ca. 300m/328 yds: colors of your choice but note that the blue color stops the light so any color with some blue in it (including greens and purples) are not recommended for the flower itself but you can use them all in the leaves.
For the leaves: Plötulopi by ístex or Léttlopi by ístex, 100% new wool, 50g/skein = 100m/108 yds.
Each flower/leave uses about 8 g (24m/26 yds). There is enough in the kit to make 10 leaves and 10 flowers.
Needles: 5,5 mm / US 9 circ needle. Magic loop is used but you can also use DPN’s.
Gauge: 10 cm/4” = 14 sts with plötulopi held double. Gauge is not important.
