Þórdís is a shawl in the collection of the Icelandic Handicrafts Association. The original shawl is knitted using extremely fine, double plied handspun þel (undercoat wool of the Icelandic sheep), with white as the main color while the color stripes and lace border are made up of countless greys and natural browns, carded together in such a way that color change is almost imperceptible. This pattern is based on the original as closely and exactly as possible, though the color variations are fewer and have different shade nuances than the handspun yarn. It is part of Sigríður Halldórsdóttir’s book Þríhyrnur og langsjöl 1988 (Triangular and long shawls), a reference for Icelandic lace shawls published in the book. Hélène reworked the charts and added written instructions, while the use of her Love Story yarn gets the shawl closer to the original one in finesse.
The PDF contains charted and written instructions and cannot be purchased alone.
The kit contains 8 skeins of Love Story, but the yardage of 3 skeins is enough. You will have more than enough left overs in the contrasting colors to knit 1 or 2 more lace shawls.

BACKGROUND STORY
Þórdís: No written records exist for this Þórdís shawl but when compared to triangular shawls known to have been worked by Þórdís Egilsdóttir (1878-1961), housewife from Ísafjördur in the West Fjords of Iceland. There is little doubt that this shawl is one of hers.
It is part of Sigríður Halldórsdóttir’s book Þríhyrnur og langsjöl 1988 (Triangular and long shawls), a reference for Icelandic lace shawls published in the book. Hélène reworked the charts and added written instructions, while the use of her Love Story yarn gets the shawl closer to the original one in finesse.

Yarn: Love Story from Hélène Magnússon, pure new wool, 100% Icelandic lambswool, fine lace weight, 1 ply, 25 g skein = 225 m / 246 yds
MC: Natural white, 2 skeins
CC1 Hafra beige, CC2 Natural brown, CC3 Natural black (very dark brown), CC4 Natural grey (light), CC5 Basalt grey grey (dark), CC6 Raven black, 1 skein each.
Gauge: 10 x10 cm / 4”x 4” = 22 sts and 26 rows in Stocking st on needle 4 mm
Needles: Size 4 mm/US 6 circ needle; size 3 mm / USC2/D3 crochet hook
Notions: optional markers, darning needle, blocking wires and pins, blocking mat.
Techniques: The shawl alternates white stripes with purled sts and patterned stripes with shading of natural grey and brown colors. The triangle is knitted from the bottom up. Then sts are picked up at the cast on edge and the lace border worked from the top down.
