An Exciting and Active Knitting Tour in the North of Iceland: midnight sun, traditional Icelandic mittens
Departure: June 24 – July 1st, 2026
This beautiful tour takes you to the incredible mountain range of Tröllaskagi – the peninsula of the Trolls – in the North of Iceland. In June, it’s daylight all night long so we shall not fear the trolls but enjoy very long hours to explore the beautiful outdoors of the mountain landscapes and to listen to Hélène sharing her knowledge about Icelandic knitting heritage with focus on the traditional mittens. During the tour we will knit a pair of mittens with Grýla*, the most famous Icelandic trolless known for eating naughty children at Christmas… We will also visit local craftsmen in the area, the Tannery centre in Skagafjörður and the Textile Museum in Blönduós, as well as meet with local spinners and dyers in the Borgarfjörður region. Accommodation in picturesque country guesthouse and farm. Sleeping bag accommodation. Accommodation in a country guesthouse with a sauna.

Participants´ help with washing dishes is highly appreciated.
Because participants come from all over the world, the tours are operated mainly in English but Hélène is bilingual in French. A lexical of knitting terms in German/English/French/Icelandic is available during the tour.
Fitness et hiking level: moderate.
Accessible to all those in good health, who are doing some sport regularly, and who are used to all-terrain hikes (gravel roads, trails and very uneven terrain). 2-6 hours walk per day, without carrying much weight. Ascents. Because we are taking only half day hikes from our country guesthouse and back, participants have the possibility to skip some hikes.
ITINERARY
Day 1 (2026, June 24): Knitters arrive to Iceland from all over the world at various time during the day. Night at a guesthouse in Reykjavík close to the Icelandic Handknitting Association of Iceland, full of lopi sweaters and wool.
Day 2 (2026, June 25): In the morning, we set out for a knitting adventure and head north to the wondrous mountain range of Tröllaskagi or the peninsula of the Trolls. Our destination is a picturesque country guesthouse, located in an idyllic valley with views of the grand peaks. Here we will stay for the next 4 nights. Picnic lunch enroute and dinner on the premises.
Day 3 (2026, June 26): This day will be spent knitting and exploring the mountain range of the Troll peninsula by following one of the many interesting hiking trails. Picnic lunch while hiking and dinner on the premises. Relaxing time in the sauna!
Hike: 4 hours. Distance: 6-8 km/ 4,3-5 miles, can vary depending on the trail chosen and group’s level. Ascent/descent: 200-400 m / 650-1312 ft. Trail and uneven terrain.
Day 4 (2026, June 27): Today we continue exploring the area around, visit the animals and little lambs and join in on an interesting knitting workshop with Hélène. Picnic lunch while hiking and dinner on the premises.
Hike: 4 hours on uneven terrain. Distance: 6-8 km/ 4,3-5 miles, can vary depending on the trail chosen and group’s level. Ascent/descent: 200-400 m / 650-1312 ft. Trail and uneven terrain.
Day 5 (2026, June 28): This will be our last day hiking and knitting with the trolls, the lambs, and enjoying the sauna and the company of our hostess! Picnic lunch while hiking and dinner on the premises.

Day 6 (2026, June 29): After three whole days in the idyllic landscapes of the Trolls peninsula we will continue our journey and explore more of the enchanting north Iceland. Our bus will take us to the charming village of Hofsós and its infinity pool, and we will visit the Textile Museum in Blönduós. We will end our day at a guesthouse by the beach where we will spend the night and enjoy an exquisite dinner. Picnic lunch enroute.
Day 7 (2026, June 30): Now is time to say goodbye to the beautiful North and head back to Reykjavík. On the way, we will stop at various places that are of interest to all knitters and wool lovers and where we will be able to shop for delicious plant dyed and hand spun yarns. Picnic lunch enroute and a night at same guesthouse in Reykjavík. Farewell gathering at Hélène’s inspiring workspace and free evening in the city.

KNITTING WORKSHOP
TRADITIONAL ICELANDIC MITTENS
A bit of history: Hélène will tell us about the rich Icelandic tradition from the moment it came to Iceland in the 16th century to our modern times. She will tell us especially about all the many different types of mittens in Iceland and we will be able to see many genuine samples at the textile Museum in Blönduós.
Icelandic wool workshop: Hélène will tell us about the Icelandic wool, from the very fine handspun lace yarns made of thel to the highly breakable unspun lopi. She will tell us about the novelty Icelandic yarns that she developed, Grýla, Gilitrutt and Katla, and that are particularly suitable for mittens. We will experience the feeling of knitting with such different yarns.
Traditional mittens workshop: Hélène will tell us about the many different types of mittens in Iceland. Specific motifs and patterns may originate from a specific area in the country, a village or even a family: Leaf mittens from the Westfjords, embroidered mittens, stranded mittens, Nordic-style mitten, lace mittens. We will go through the main constructions and characteristics seen in the Icelandic mittens, and learn all sorts of neat shaping and finishing. Helene will focus extensively and in detail about the various knitting techniques used in the mittens, such as stranded knitting, the Old Icelandic cross stitch, etc…
The traditional Icelandic steek and beyond: Almost everything in Iceland is knitted in the round then simply steeked (cut into the finished knitting). We will try our hands at the traditional Icelandic way. It’s not very useful for mittens but it’s a good skill to know to continue knitting Icelandic
