Design: Hélène Magnússon
The Rollur mittens are an ode to the Icelandic sheep. Brought by the first settlers more than a 1000 years ago, the Icelandic sheep is the only breed of sheep in Iceland, and it is strictly forbidden to mix it with any other breeds. Rollur (pronounced rodlur and rolling the r) is a familiar term for sheep in Iceland.
One of the assignments I set myself when designing these mittens was to draw a sheep that was immediately recognizable as an Icelandic sheep and could not be confused with a goat or any other horned animal. There exists a gene with no horns, but most Icelandic sheep do have them from birth: you can feel the little bumps growing on the heads of the newborn lambs.
And what better way to honor the Icelandic sheep than to also use the beautiful Heiður yarn (Heiður means Honor in Icelandic) from Urðurull ? This exceptionally soft yarn is spun with lamb’s wool from the Dalir valleys in the West of Iceland and available in all the natural colors of the Icelandic sheep.
The Rollur mittens have corrugated ribbing in the cuffs and the hands are decorated with rams and ewes. The mittens are available in 4 sizes for the whole family. All the sizes are charted and include a reverse color chart.
Sizes: XS(S,M,L): the first 2 sizes for children and the last 2 for adults.
