Birgitta is a classic Icelandic lopi sweater for toddlers and children but with a more refined shape and it is much softer and lighter than regular lopi sweaters. I achieved this by knitting a single strand of Plötulopi together with my Love Story lace yarn. Icelandic children, mine included, often complain that the Léttlopi is scratchy. The Icelandic Love Story ads both softness and sturdiness to the unspun lopi. The pattern gives instructions both for a sweater and for a cardigan with button bands.

Birgitta has a few modern tweaks in the spirit of my popular adult sweaters Gamaldags (for women) and Gamallegur (for men): I refined the shape with a very discreet A-line for comfort and ease of movement, as well as with my signature short rows to create a true neckline. I added some elbow shaping to prevent the formation of holes, a very efficient technique borrowed from Icelandic jackets from the past centuries.
Then I coudn‘t help but matching Birgitta’s colors with those of Gamaldags and Gamallegur as well as the baby sweater Gilipeysa.

Positive ease at chest: 5 cm/2”.
Choose a size: add the ease to the actual chest measurement and choose the size the closest to the result. Note that length can vary a lot between children.

- Love Story Einband from Hélène Magnússon, 100% new wool, 100% Icelandic lambswool, fine lace weight, 1 ply, 25 g skein = 225 m / 246 yds: 2(2,2,3)3,3,3 skeins

Other material: for cardigan, 5 to 7 buttons and ribbon twice the length of the front bands.
Needles: 4 mm/US 6 and 4.5 mm/US 7 circular needles 80 cm / 32” long. Magic loop is used for smaller diameters but you can use shorter needles or double-pointed needles.
Notions: darning needle, markers, 4 stitch holders, sewing machine or needle and thread.
Techniques: the body and sleeves are knitted in the round in stocking st. At the armholes, they are combined on one needle and the motif knitted in stranded knitting. The underarms are grafted. The cardigan is steeked.
