Hélène says: “I like to look at things closely and to magnify details. This is what happened here looking at the delicate edging of an Icelandic lace shawl. Knitted in the round with a chunky yarn and big needles, it becomes a pretty scarf. Folded in two or wrapped around the neck, once, twice, even three times, it will stay in place. It looks adorable as a shawlette around the shoulders.”

The instructions are both written and charted which will help knitters not used to charts to learn how to read them and be able to knit more complicated Icelandic shawls.

The designer

Hélène Magnússon likes to put a new spin on old Icelandic knitting traditions. She enjoys designs with strong ties to Iceland and that tell a story. She is best known for her research into the traditional Icelandic intarsia that was mostly seen in knitted insoles in the past centuries. Her book, Icelandic knitting: using Rose Patterns is available in three languages. She is a French native but a true Icelandic knitter and has an Icelandic family. Hélène abandoned a law career in Paris for the love of Icelandic nature. She worked as a mountain guide for many years in Iceland and studied textile and fashion design at the Iceland Academy of the Arts. She is the head and designer behind The Icelandic Knitter.

Size: one size fits all but the scarf can easily be made longer or shorter: simply cast on any multiple of 6 sts to work the pattern.

Finished measurements: Length (inside circumference): 59 inches (1.5m)

Wool: Rowan Cocoon (80% merino wool and 20% kid mohair; 126yd/115m per 100g skein): MC: 801 Polar, 1 skein; CC: 806 Frost, 1 skein; CC :810 Cairn, 1 skein

Scarf has three colors and calls therefore for 3 skeins of yarn but there will be enough to make two, inverting the colors. Total yardage for one: 208 yards

Needles: US 10.5-10.75- 11 /7 mm circular needle, 32” /80 cm long; Crochet hook US J10 /6 mm

Gauge: 14 sts and 16 rows = 4 inches/10 cm in stocking stitch

Techniques: lace, knitting in the round

Pattern: once you’ve made your payment, you will receive an email with instructions on how to download the pattern. It comes as a PDF file. We don’t send pattern by snail mail.

Errata: no mistake was found in this pattern.
