Life in Iceland was not easy in the days when knitted inserts in soft shoes were in common use. No colored yarn could be wasted and leftovers were highly suitable for knitting decorative inserts. Everyone liked to own something beautiful like a pair of inserts with roses. In the spirit of the old inserts, this pattern is free for you to knit a beautiful scarf for someone you love. A popular vintage style scarf and old Icelandic shoe insoles in a rose pattern - these were my inspiration for knitting a lovely but practical scarf with roses. The rose motif could be seen on patterned knitted insoles used in sheep ans fish skin shoes in Iceland. It is knitted in Icelandic intarsia (intarsia in garter stitch). The designer Hélène Magnússon likes to put a new spin on old Icelandic knitting traditions. She enjoys designs with strong ties to Iceland and that tell a story. She is best known for her research into the traditional Icelandic intarsia that was mostly seen in knitted insoles in the past centuries. Her book, Icelandic knitting: using Rose Patterns is available in three languages. She is a French native but a true Icelandic knitter and has an Icelandic family. Hélène abandoned a law career in Paris for the love of Icelandic nature. She worked as a mountain guide for many years in Iceland and studied textile and fashion design at the Iceland Academy of the Arts. She is the head and designer behind The Icelandic Knitter.

Size: One size, adaptable to any neck length Yarn: Notes: These yarns can be replaced by suitable alternatives of similar weight, length and gauge. I hope knitters will make up their own color schemes for the rose patterns, using yarn remnants, just as Icelandic women did when they knitted shoe insoles a long time ago. Needles: 3 mm needles (US size 4), 3 mm crochet hook (US 0), stitch holder Gauge: 10 x 10 cm (4” x 4”) in garter stitch = 23 sts and 19 garters (38 rows) |
