Margrét is a triangular shawl in the purest Icelandic lace tradition with its spider motif in the body and an undulating lace border displaying the beautiful natural colors of the Icelandic sheep. In the Old days, shawls like this would be knitted with a very fine and soft handspun þel yarn, the inner soft layer of the Icelandic sheep. Today, Love Story is the Icelandic yarn that comes the closest to it. The pattern was also published in my book Icelandic Handknits (Voyageurs Press).

The pattern story

Hélène tells us more about the pattern

The many colors in the kit mean that there is left over yarn: enough at least to knit another little shawl!

The pattern was also published in my book Icelandic Handknits (Voyageurs Press).

Hélène Magnússon is a Icelandic knit designer, the author of many books about traditional Icelandic knitting and the editor of The Icelandic Knitter. She likes to put a new spin on Icelandic traditions. She began her professional life as a lawyer in Paris before she made a complete life change and moved to Iceland, where she studied textiles and fashion at Iceland Academy of the Arts and worked as a hired girl in a sheep farm and a mountain guide. The varied skills she learned in those early years richly inform the amazing hiking and knitting tours she passionately guides in collaboration with tour operator Icelandic Mountain Guides / Iceland Rovers.
