Love « The Icelandic Knitter

"Love is a little scarf that will keep you warm and stylish, even with a bad throat! Inspired by the ethereal Icelandic long shawls, it valorises Hélène Magnússon’s Love Story yarn, an artisanal lace weight yarn made of pure Icelandic wool and very soft compared to the other Icelandic yarns. Love Story is probably the closest to the handspun yarn that were used to knit intricate lace shawls in Iceland in the past. They were so fine they could be drawn through a golden ring. Knitted with relatively big needles for such a fine lace, this scarf is however a quick and easy knit that will reveal its beauty only once blocked. I always wear it when I have a cold, day and night! Do not hesitate to block it regularly as you use it."

The pattern was first published in the book Knitting scarves from around the world: 23 patterns in a variety of styles and techniques, Voyageurs Press (2011).

The designer

Hélène Magnússon is a leading knit designer in Iceland, the author of many books about traditional Icelandic knitting and the editor of The Icelandic Knitter. She likes to put a new spin on Icelandic traditions. She began her professional life as a lawyer in Paris before she made a complete life change and moved to Iceland, where she studied textile and fashion at Iceland Academy of the Arts and worked as a hired girl in a sheep farm and a mountain guide. The varied skills she learned in those early years richly inform the amazing hiking and knitting tours she passionately guides in collaboration with tour operator Icelandic Mountain Guides.

Yarn:  Love Story by Hélène Magnússon, 100% Icelandic wool; fine lace weigh; 25g/skein=.210m/130yds; natural sheep color white #01: 20g

Gauge: not essential: 4x4”/10x10cm = 19 sts and 40 rows on needle 5 mm/US 8

Needles: 5 mm/US 8 straight or circular needle, two sets; hook 3 mm/ US D/3

Notions : scrap yarn for provisional cast on; rustproof pins for blocking. Optional: flexible blocking wires. 

Techniques: lace, provisional cast on.
