Knitted with the very fine Icelandic lambswool yarn Love Story and Einrúm, an Icelandic wool and silk blend, the Gára cowl by Hélène Magnússon can be worn as a snug shoulder cape, a snood, a hood or a lush cowl. The use of yarns of completely different weights give the collar relief and create an interesting knit for stranded knitting beginners and experience knitters alike.

Yarn used: Love Story or equivalent fine lace yarn and Einrúm (lopi + silk) or equivalent sport/aran weight

The pattern story

Hélène tells us more about the pattern

More enveloping than a snood, Gára is a snug collar that covers the shoulders and can also be worn as a hood. The easy colorwork is enhanced by the mottled wool Einrúm (lopi + silk), alternating with delicate bands of Stocking stitch with the very fine Icelandic lace Love Story. The use of yarns of completely different weights as well as different size needles give the collar relief reminiscent of roped lava. Gára means folding in Icelandic.

Love Story is an exceptional lace yarn created by Hélène Magnússon. It is a very fine 1 ply lace weight yarn made of soft Icelandic lambswool carefully selected by Hélène from Icelandic sheep farmers. Love Story knits beautifully into very delicate and ethereal lace shawls and reminds of the old handspun yarns that Icelandic lace is known for.

Einrúm E by Kristin Brynja is  a lace weight yarn made of lopi and thai silk. Twinned together, the result is an incredibly soft and airy yarn, as light as the unspun Icelandic yarns and as strong as the silk. It comes in an array of earthy colors obtained by mixing natural wool colors with 4 threads of silk.

Hélène Magnússon is a Icelandic knit designer, the author of many books about traditional Icelandic knitting and the editor of The Icelandic Knitter. She likes to put a new spin on Icelandic traditions. She began her professional life as a lawyer in Paris before she made a complete life change and moved to Iceland, where she studied textiles and fashion at Iceland Academy of the Arts and worked as a hired girl in a sheep farm and a mountain guide. The varied skills she learned in those early years richly inform the amazing hiking and knitting tours she passionately guides in collaboration with tour operator Icelandic Mountain Guides / Iceland Rovers.
