About the designer

Kitschfríður  tells us about her inspiration:

“Outdoor swimming pools are very popular in Iceland and one could say there is a swimming pool culture in Iceland. I go there very often and when I lived abroad, going to the pool was probably what I missed the most from Iceland. Outdoor swimming pools with geothermal water are indeed special, more like spas than regular indoor pools.

the pool was probably what I missed the most from Iceland

As a textile designer, I always wondered in the pool why swimcaps always have to be so ugly! Old Hollywood movies and vintage swimsuits inspired this knitted children cap. So did the Campion moss that grow in the Icelandic highlands, like little swimcaps in the desert!

The designer

Sigríður Ásta Árnadóttir is an educated textile designer. She has been working for many years with recycling old clothes, dyeing and embellishing them. She sells her designs at Kirsuberjatréð, a little designer shop downtown Reykjavík and run since 1984 by a group af female designers and artists. Sigríður is known under the label Kitschfríður  - it’s very decorative and colourful, a bit kitsch! She also publishes knitting or crocheting patterns in between and children patterns are her favourite.
